After years of travelling regularly between Finnish Lapland and Northern Norway, these are the seven things we believe you should know before planning a trip to Tromsø.

1. Tromsø is much more than Tromsø

One of the biggest surprises for first-time visitors is how much there is to see outside the city itself. Many of our favourite places are located along the surrounding coastlines, islands and mountain roads.

Places like Sommarøy, Ersfjord, Grøtfjord and Lyngen offer some of Northern Norway’s most spectacular scenery and can completely change the character of your trip.

When planning your visit, think beyond the city centre. Some of the most memorable experiences begin once you leave it behind.

2. The best season depends on what you want to experience

People often ask us when the best time to visit Tromsø is. The answer depends entirely on what kind of trip you are looking for. Winter offers snow-covered landscapes, Polar Nights, Northern Lights and a true Arctic atmosphere. Summer brings Midnight Sun, hiking opportunities and endless daylight. Autumn and spring are often overlooked but are wonderful with fewer visitors and beautiful changing landscapes.

There is no single perfect season. There is only the season that best matches your expectations.

3. A rental car gives you more freedom

You can certainly enjoy Tromsø without a car. However, if you want to explore beyond the city, a rental car can completely transform your experience. Many beautiful viewpoints, beaches, mountain roads and small villages are much easier to explore with a car. A car allows you to stop when the light is perfect, follow a scenic road simply because it looks interesting and discover places that never appear on organised tour itineraries.

4. Weather can change quickly

The weather in Northern Norway is part of the adventure. It is also one of the reasons flexibility is so important. A mountain hidden by clouds in the morning may be perfectly clear by afternoon. A rainy forecast can turn into a beautiful evening. When planning activities, leave some room for spontaneity and avoid creating a schedule that is too packed.

5. You don’t need to fill every hour

Many visitors try to fit too much into their itinerary. Northern Norway is a place best experienced at a slower pace. Some of our favourite memories involve simple moments:

• watching waves roll onto a beach in Sommarøy.

• stopping for coffee with a fjord view.

• driving a scenic road with no particular destination in mind.

Allow yourself time to enjoy the atmosphere.

6. Some of the best places aren’t famous

Tromsø has several well-known attractions and many of them are worth visiting. But some of the places we return to again and again are quiet viewpoints, scenic roads and lesser-known corners of the region. Often, the experience itself matters more than checking another attraction off a list.

7. Planning takes longer than you would expect

This is perhaps the biggest lesson we have learned. There is an overwhelming amount of information online. Blog posts, maps, restaurant recommendations, activity providers, accommodation options and seasonal advice are scattered across hundreds of websites. Trying to organise everything into a coherent trip can quickly become time-consuming.
