Lapland does not have snow all year. Here we have long, harsh winters that typically last for about seven months.
But as soon as the snow melts, greenery appears, and the Midnight Sun phenomenon starts, providing 24-hour daylight with no night. Seasons in Lapland are easily noticeable, allowing you to witness the changing landscapes.
First snow
In Levi, we typically see the first snow that stays throughout the winter by mid-October, but this isn't always certain. In winter 2022, Rovaniemi saw a lack of snow at the beginning of the season, leading to an increase in our Arctic Spa bookings from tourists staying in Rovaniemi, who then traveled two hours north to Levi to enjoy our Spa and witness some deep snow. In 2023, a significant snowfall came to Levi on the 19th of September and lasted only a few days. It caught everyone off guard as most people had not fitted winter tires at that time. Then on the 11th October the snow arrived and remained throughout the entire winter season. Normally, the snow begins to melt towards the end of April and is mostly gone from many areas by the end of May. The speed at which the snow melts depends on the weather conditions.
When there is most snow and when it melts?
Typically, the snow depth is greatest from March to early April, as its an accumulation of all the snowfall, that started in mid-October. November, December and January are usually the months with the most snowfall. Normally, the snow begins to melt towards the end of April and is mostly gone from many areas by the end of May. The speed at which the snow melts depends on the weather conditions.

Do you know that Levi collect snow?
Storing snow under insulated covers means that the resort can open the ski season as early as the start of October. As you now know, we usually have our first snow of the season in mid October, however it’s not enough to ski on. The recycled snow acts as a perfect base for any new snow that comes. Currently snow is stored on the front slope, the world cup slope and one of the cross-country ski routes. Just in case the snow is late in coming, many of the slopes are equipped with snow making systems. On the front slope a new man-made glacier is also being made. This could mean in a few years time skiing is possible all your round. The snow is stored on ski slopes and it is covered with insulation and plastic sheets to protect it on summer’s hotter days. In summer 2024 Levi stored more than 200.000 m3 of snow and the plan is to store more the following years.
