Where to stay in Levi, Finland: A guide to choosing the right area

When people start planning a trip to Levi, they often spend hours comparing hotels, cabins and apartments. But there is one question that is even more important: Where in Levi should you stay?
Choosing the right location can completely change your holiday.
Some visitors want to step straight into restaurants and cafes each evening. Others imagine waking up surrounded by snowy trees, enjoying the silence before heading out to explore. Neither is better. The best place to stay depends on how you want to experience Lapland.
After living in Levi since 2018, we have learnt that travellers who think about their location before booking almost always have a better holiday.
Here are the things we recommend considering.
Start with your holiday, not your accommodation
Instead of searching for “the best hotel in Levi”, think about what you want your days to look like.
Ask yourself:
Will skiing be the main focus?
Do you plan to explore by car?
Will you join organised activities every day?
Are you looking for peace and quiet?
Do you want restaurants within walking distance?
Are you celebrating something special?
Is this your first visit to Lapland?
Once you know the answers, choosing where to stay becomes much easier.
Levi is small, but it feels very different depending on where you stay. Many first-time visitors imagine Levi as one small village. In reality, it has several very different areas. Some accommodation is right in the centre. Some sits among holiday cabins. Some is surrounded by forest. Some offers ski-in, ski-out access.
Although driving between them only takes a few minutes, the atmosphere can be completely different.
That is why location matters.
Staying in the centre
If convenience is your priority, staying in the village centre makes a lot of sense. You can easily walk to restaurants, cafes, supermarkets, shops, many activity meeting points, the front slopes
This is a great choice if:
you do not want to hire a car
you enjoy having everything nearby
you like a livelier atmosphere
The trade-off is that the centre is naturally busier, especially during the peak winter months.
Staying outside the village centre
This is the option many people overlook. Just a short drive from the centre, the atmosphere changes completely. Instead of traffic and people walking past your window, you may wake up surrounded by forest, hear nothing except birds and watch snow fall in complete silence.
For many couples, this is the Lapland they imagined.
If you have a rental car, or don’t mind taking a taxi, staying slightly outside the centre often gives you the best of both worlds. You can enjoy peaceful surroundings while still reaching restaurants, activities and the ski slopes within a few minutes.
Do you really need to be within walking distance?
Many visitors think they do. Then they arrive and realise they only walk into the village once each day.
If you are planning to do many activities you may spend very little time in the village itself. For many travellers, a quiet location becomes more valuable than being able to walk everywhere.
Should you hire a car?
One of the questions we are asked most often is whether you need a rental car in Levi.
The honest answer is: not necessarily.
Many visitors enjoy the flexibility of having a car. It makes it easy to explore different parts of Lapland, visit scenic viewpoints and travel at your own pace. However, plenty of travellers have a wonderful holiday without one. If you stay in a convenient location, join organised activities and use local taxis when needed, hiring a car may not be necessary.
Think about how you would like to spend your holiday. If you plan to explore independently every day, a car can be a good option. If you are happy to relax, enjoy organised experiences and take the occasional taxi, you may find you do not need one at all.
Which type of accommodation suits you?
There is no perfect answer. It depends on the experience you want.
Hotels are convenient and often include breakfast and other services.
Resorts offer everything in one place.
Apartments offer flexibility, particularly for longer stays.
Traditional cabins often provide more privacy and a cosy atmosphere.
Boutique accommodation is usually more personal, with greater attention to design, service and the overall experience.
Rather than asking which type is best, ask which one matches your holiday.
Think about your evenings
When planning a trip, most people focus on daytime activities. In reality, you will probably spend every evening at your accommodation.
Imagine returning after several hours outside in temperatures below freezing. Where would you rather be?
A busy hotel corridor?
Or somewhere quiet where you can slow down, warm up and enjoy the atmosphere?
Your accommodation is not simply somewhere to sleep.
It becomes part of your holiday.
Common mistakes when choosing where to stay
The most common mistakes we see are:
booking accommodation that does not match the holiday you want
not checking the location carefully
assuming all accommodation in Levi is within walking distance
trying to stay as close as possible to everything
forgetting to think about evenings as well as daytime activities
A few minutes of research before booking can make a big difference.
So, where should you stay?
There is no single answer.
If you love convenience and do not plan to hire a car, the village centre may be the right choice.
If you picture peaceful mornings, quiet evenings and a slower pace while still being close to everything Levi offers, staying just outside the centre may suit you better.
The most important thing is choosing accommodation that supports the holiday you want—not simply the accommodation with the nicest photographs.
