How do you get to such a remote and northerly location? We do have airports that have connections from all over Europe. Mostly you can get one of many regular connections from Helsinki Vantaa airport. You might want to make a road trip of it. The roads are good and mostly very quiet. Or maybe you want to take the train from Helsinki. It even has car carriages so you could twin it with a road trip. Here are some more details of your travel options.

Travel by plane - 6 airports in Lapland:
Enontekio - main destinations Hetta and Muonio
Ivalo - northernmost airport in Finland. Main destinations - Inari and Saariselkä
Kemi-Tornio - located only 30 minutes' from Swedish border
Kittilä - main destinations - Levi and Ylläs, Pallas National Park
Kuusamo - main destinations - Ruka and Kuusamo
Rovaniemi - busiest airport in Lapland main destination - Santa Claus
In winter there are many flights into these destinations. In summer the schedules are much reduced. There are a number of airlines flying direct to Lapland. Here are a few of them: Finnair, BA, Lufthansa, KLM, Ryanair, easyjet, Eurowings, Air France, Norwegian, Air Baltic, Turkish Airlines. This isn’t an exhaustive list, so we recommend using a flight search website such as sky scanner to find your flights. Helsinki Vantaa is a global hub airport with direct flights from all over the world. From there you can take one of many connecting flights to your desired Lapland destination.
By train
VR is the train company in Finland. The most northern train stop in Lapland is Kolari. There are also trains that you can take your car with you too so check the website for possibilities, timetable and prices.
By bus
Matkahuolto is a national bus network. Check destinations, timeline and prices on their website. You can also check Onnibus.
By car
You could drive here of course, but you will need winter tires between October and May. You can find more detail about winter driving in our next post and in our Lapland guide.
